Entrepreneurship X Startup: a bibliometric comparative from 1990 to 2016

The business environment becomes increasingly competitive, which encourages the improvement of companies to them get better the needs of their customers and do not lose their market share. Developments arise in this context, with some by opportunities and others by necessity. Startups are an example of entrepreneurship by opportunities, it is small companies, generally technology-based, providing a repeatable and scalable service. The aim of this article is to show, quantitatively, the academic and scientific publications on the topics entrepreneurship and startup, to be of great importance both to academic and to the business environment. Thus, the theoretical foundation sought to define entrepreneurship, explain what is entrepreneurship by opportunity and necessity and, finally, to conceptualize what is startup. The methodology used was a bibliometric comparison of the themes, which bibliometrics is a way to quantitatively measure the scientific production on a particular topic. Entrepreneurship and, mostly, startup are still not widespread in academic environment. The comparative bibliometric showed that the number of publications in journals and the number of theses and dissertations on entrepreneurship significantly outperformed the startup and that both the appearance to the first written work was from the 2000s, thus presenting a delayed response of the brazilian academy in research related to the themes.
