Resumo: This article addresses major topics for understanding the phenomenon known as “youth decapitalization” in rural Spain. It explores the role of representations and demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the rural environment, social class and gender conditioning factors. It also looks at the impact of the design of development policies on generating expectations of migration or permanence on the part of young rural women and men. The empirical basis for this reflection is provided by the results of more than a decade of research in the field of rural youth, which integrates quantitative and qualitative methods that demonstrate the need to cater for young people and develop specific actions for them.

En él se explora el papel de las representaciones y las características demográficas y socioeconómicas del rural, de los condicionantes de clase social y género, así como la incidencia de la formación y el diseño de las políticas de desarrollo en la generación de expectativas de migración o arraigo por parte de los y las jóvenes rurales. La base empírica de esta reflexión la ofrecen los resultados de una línea de investigación de más de una década en el campo de la juventud rural, que integra métodos cuantitativos y cualitativos los cuales muestran la necesidad de atender a la juventud y desarrollar acciones específicas para ésta.Cet article aborde des axes fondamentaux pour comprendre le phénomène de la “décapitalisation de la jeunesse” en milieu rural espagnol. Il examine le rôle des représentations et des caractéristiques démographiques et socio-économiques de l’environnement rural, les contraintes de classe sociale et de genre, ainsi que l’impact que la mise en oeuvre de politiques de développement a sur la création d’attentes en termes de migration ou de permanence des jeunes ruraux, hommes et femmes. Cette réflexion se base sur les résultats de plus d’une décennie de recherche empirique sur la question de la jeunesse rurale qui intègre des méthodes quantitatives et qualitatives, une démontration qu’il faut développer des actions especifiques pour la jeunesse.Este artigo aborda tópicos fundamentais para a compreensão do fenômeno denominado “descapitalização juvenil” no meio rural espanhol. Explora-se, assim, o papel das representações e das características demográficas e socioeconômicas do meio rural, dos condicionantes de classe social e gênero, assim como a incidência da formação do desenho das políticas de desenvolvimento na geração de expectativas de migração ou permanência por parte dos jovens e das jovens rurais.
