Profiles of consumers of reading materials in Brazil

Resumo: A generalized linear model was adjusted to the probability of the Brazilian population to acquire reading materials based on data from the National Household Budget Survey of 2008-09 of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics – IBGE. The explanatory variables were age, gender, years of schooling, being a student, family income, schooling of the head of the household, and a geographic indicator. The dependent variable was the event of the acquisition of various kinds of reading materials. The main fi nding was the discontinuity in the probability of acquisition of reading material as a function of years of schooling: persons with at least one year of higher education differ from others. Another important factor is the access to such reading material through marketing channels. The effect of a student in the family seems to be restricted only to textbooks. The study confirms results observed by other authors: the differentials between the sexes, even when controlled for socioeconomic level, education and age.

Las variables explicativas fueron: edad, sexo, años de educación, ser estudiante, renta familiar, nível educativo de la persona de referencia y área geográfi ca. La variable dependiente fue el hecho de adquirir diversos tipos de material de lectura. El principal hallazgo fue la existencia de discontinuidad en las probabilidades de adquisición de material de lectura en función de los años de estudio: sujetos con al menos um año de educación superior se diferencian de los demás. Otro factor importante es el acceso a través de la existencia de canales de comercialización. El efecto de la existencia de estudiante en la familia parece restringirse a los libros didácticos. El estudio confi rma los resultados observados por otros autores: diferenciales entre sexos, incluso controlando por nivel socioeconómico, educación y edad.  Un modèle linéaire généralisé a été ajusté à la probabilité d’achat de matériel de lecture en utilisant des données de l’Enquête sur le Budget des Familles 2008-09 de l’Institut Brésilien de Géographie et Statistiques – IBGE. Les variables explicatives ont été les suivantes: âge, sexe, nombre d’années d’étude, statut d’étudiant, revenu familial, niveau de scolarité de la personne de référence et zone géographique. La variable dépendante a été l’événement de l’achat de divers types de matériel de lecture. Le résultat principal a montré une discontinuité dans les probabilités d’achat du matériel de lecture en fonction du nombre d´années d’étude, les individus ayant au moins un an d’études universitaires se différenciant des autres. Un autre facteur important est l’achat par l’intermédiaire de chaînes de commercialisation. L’effet de la présence d’un étudiant dans la famille ne semble concerner que les livres didactiques. L’étude confi rme les résultats déjà observes par d’autres auteurs: des différentiels entre les sexes même en contrôlant les effets des niveaux socio-économique, d’éducation et d’âge.  Foi ajustado um modelo linear generalizado à probabilidade de aquisição de material de leitura com dados da Pesquisa de Orçamento Familiar 2008-2009 do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografi a e Estatística – IBGE.
