Between history and memory: the psychosocial study of historical memories

Resumo: The article approaches the idea of “historical memories” which, as a conceptual instance of the phenomenon of social memory, designates the “memories of history” constructed by people that were involved in facts that became “historical”. The present study falls within the realm of social psychology, having no implication for the scientific production of history. Thus, this paper attempts to distinguish it from the “memorial history” which constitutes an alternative type of history, based on the memories of the participants in certain events and without subjecting them to the classic criteria of historic research or of rigorous psychosocial analysis. It is concluded that, understood as an academic undertaking in the tradition of social psychology, “historical memories” do not claim any relation to true history. They are conceived as memories, not as history, which products do not bear exclusive contribution to their formation, seeing that there is more to the historical memory than history could provide.

Este estudio pertenece al ámbito de la psicología social y no tiene ninguna implicación con la producción científica de la historia. De este modo se trata de distinguirlas de las “historias memoriales”, que constituyen un tipo alternativo de historia, a partir de los recuerdos de participantes en determinados eventos, sin someterlos a los criterios clásicos de la investigación histórica y tampoco a un riguroso análisis psicosocial. Se concluye que, entendidas como un emprendimiento académico según la tradición de la psicología social, las “memorias históricas” no defienden ninguna relación con la verdad histórica. Ellas son concebidas como memorias, no como historia, los cuyos productos no dan cuenta exclusivamente de su determinación, debido al hecho de que hay más en la memoria histórica que aquello que la historia sería capaz de suplir.O artigo aborda a noção de “memórias históricas”, a qual, como uma instância conceitual do fenômeno da memória social, designa as “memórias da história” construídas por populações que estiveram implicadas em fatos que se tornaram “históricos”. Este estudo é da alçada da psicologia social, não tendo qualquer implicação para a produção científica da história. Assim, busca-se distingui-las das “histórias memoriais”, que constituem um tipo alternativo de história, a partir das lembranças de participantes de determinados eventos, sem submetê-los nem aos critérios clássicos da pesquisa histórica nem a uma rigorosa análise psicossocial. Conclui-se que, entendidas como um empreendimento acadêmico na tradição da psicologia social, as “memórias históricas” não advogam qualquer relação com a verdade histórica.
