Resumo: This paper aims to demonstrate the characteristics and complexities of family businesses, especially when they go through the succession process of their managers. Conceptualizes in the work what is company and presents the different modalities in which they can be constituted. Family companies, in this context, represent a specific characteristic of companies, regardless of which type they belong. In view of this, we seek to discuss in this work the challenges faced by family companies, which, faced with the desire to perpetuate their legacies between generations, face the difficulty of planning the succession of their administrators, so that there is no negative impact on the commercial activities of family business. Thus, holdings arise as an alternative to this problem, since they represent an option for the family to carry out the succession planning of the company, in order to avoid that family conflicts hamper or hinder the continuity of the family business.

Conceitua-se no trabalho o que é empresa e apresenta-se as diversas modalidades em que elas podem ser constituídas. As empresas familiares, neste contexto, representam uma característica específica das empresas, independentemente de qual modalidade elas pertencem. Diante disso, busca-se discutir neste trabalho os desafios enfrentados pelas empresas familiares, que, diante do desejo de perpetuarem seus legados entre gerações, enfrentam a dificuldade de planejar a sucessão de seus administradores, de forma que não haja impacto negativo nas atividades comerciais da empresa familiar.
