Diagnostic proposal for Library Service Platform implementation

To propose a diagnostic tool for implementation Library Service Platforms (LSPs), investigate previous implementation cases, and present methodologies for library system implementation. Using literature and previous implementation cases, the study analyzes three main LSPs: Alma, FOLIO, and WorldShare Management Services (WMS). The adopted methodology involved reviewing diagnostics developed by authors such as Rowley (2002), Café, Santos, and Macedo (2001) and implementation experiences such as Figueiredo and Terra (2016). The LSPs were evaluated based on their evolution and new features, proposing a consolidated approach for application in Brazilian libraries. As results, diagnostic criteria compatible with the identified functions in the three main LSPs (Alma, FOLIO, and WMS) were proposed, which can be used to determine the applicability and usefulness of LSP in an institution and to request information from LSP providers. Advantages of adopting LSPs were also highlighted, such as cost savings, increased system integration, workflow improvement, resource and tool sharing, enhanced analysis, interoperability, and extensibility. Additionally, the study emphasizes the need to pay attention to data security and the training and engagement of involved teams. As final considerations, the study suggests the possibility of Brazilian library consortia sharing LSPs, similar to the American scenario, to strengthen bargaining power and obtain financial advantages. The research also identifies the need for more studies on the subject, considering the small volume of resources dedicated to this topic.
