Background to the Perceived Quality of a Business Course: a nonlinear approach

Resumo: This paper has as objective to study the perceived quality antecedents of a Business Management Course under a non linear perspective. The research was carried out by interviewing 622 business students of a Higher Education Institution (HEI), using a structured questionnaire with quality dimensions based on the literature review. For processing the data it was used the SPSS 14.0 software. It was performed the factorial analysis that resulted in fifteen factors. The non linear influence of the dimensions in the course perceived quality was identified by the Kano Model using the Penalty and Reward Analysis method. The dimensions “course content applicability”, “perceived learning” and “Teachers attitude” can be classified as performance factors. The dimensions “teaching methods”, “course coordinator attitude”, “curricular grid”, “student integration in the academic life” and “campus infrastructure” can be classified as excitement factors. The dimensions “HEI social image”; “trust in the employees”; “extracurricular activities”; “course workload” and “access to infrastructure” can be classified as basic factors. The dimensions that have highest impact on perceived quality when they have above average performance are: “course content applicability”, “teaching methods” and “course coordinator attitude”. It is observed that the dimensions that have highest impact on the perceived quality when they have bellow average performance are “HEI social image”, “course content applicability”, “trust in the IES”. We can see that the dimensions with highest positive impact are related to the course and those with highest negative impacts are related to the general aspects of the HEI (except for the content applicability).Key words: Perceived quality background. Penalty and Reward Contrast Analysis.El presente estudio tiene el objetivo de identificar el efecto no lineal de las dimensiones antecedentes de la calidad percibida por los alumnos de un curso de graduación en Administración. La investigación utilizó un cuestionario estructurado elaborado a partir de la revisión de la literatura y aplicado a 622 alumnos del curso de administración de la Universidad Regional de Blumenau. Para procesar los datos se utilizó el software SPSS 14.0. Se realizó un análisis factorial, que resultó en quince factores. Para identificar la influencia no lineal, se realizó la regresión stepwise. Los atributos se clasificaron de acuerdo con el modelo Kano por medio del Penalty and Reward Contrast Analysis (PRC).Los resultados demuestran que las dimensiones aplicabilidad del contenido, aprendizaje percibido y actitud de los profesores pueden ser consideradas unidimensionales. Las dimensiones métodos de enseñanza, actitud del coordinador, plan de estudios, integración en la vida académica e infraestructura del campus pueden ser consideradas atractivas. Ya la imagen social de la IES, la confianza en las personas y en la IES, las actividades extracurriculares, el nivel de exigencia y el acceso a la infraestructura pueden catalogarse como obligatorias. Las dimensionas con mayor impacto en la calidad percibida, cuando presentan rendimiento superior a la media, son: la aplicabilidad del contenido de las disciplinas, los métodos de enseñanza utilizados y  la actitud del coordinador. Las dimensionas que presentan mayor impacto cuando el rendimiento es inferior a la media son: la imagen social de la IES, la aplicabilidad del contenido de las disciplinas, la confianza en la IES. Se observa que las dimensiones con mayor impacto positivo están directamente relacionadas con el curso, mientras que las que tienen mayor impacto negativo se relacionan con los aspectos más generales de la IES (excepto por la aplicabilidad del contenido).Palabras clave: Antecedentes de la calidad percibida. Já imagem social da IES, confiança nas pessoas e na IES, atividades extracurriculares, nível de exigência e acesso à infraestrutura podem ser enquadradas como obrigatórias. As dimensões de maior impacto na qualidade percebida, quando apresentam desempenho superior à média, são: aplicabilidade do conteúdo das disciplinas, métodos de ensino utilizados e atitude do coordenador. Já as dimensões que apresentam maior impacto, quando possuem desempenho inferior à média, são: imagem social da IES, aplicabilidade do conteúdo das disciplinas, confiança na IES. Verifica-se que as dimensões de maior impacto positivo estão relacionadas diretamente ao curso, enquanto as que têm maior impacto negativo estão relacionadas a aspectos mais gerais da IES (exceto pela aplicabilidade do conteúdo).Palavras-chave: Antecedentes da qualidade percebida.
