Resumo: | Folklore was one of the topics in fashion in Brazil when the social sciences began to be institutionalized within the nation's higher educational system. The Folklore Movement reached its apex during the fifties, and folklore, antropology, and sociology were then close interlocutors. The article describes some characteristics of the Folklore Movement and analyses the dialogue established betweem Florestan Fernandes and this area of study. The confrontation between the São Paulo 'school' of sociology and the area of folklore reveals a debate between two distinct models of science, each of wich points to a distinct project for modenizing Brazil. |
