Resumo: The article examines the impact of the introduction into Brazil of exotic plant and animal species from the beginning of the sixteenth century. Through this important practice, which had an impact on natural ecosystems, the Portuguese selected cultural elements that would be strategic to guaranteeing and expaning their controls over colonial society. Involving such experiences as the establishment of plantations and botanical gardens, plus travels to locate and research species, this process of reorganizing the Brazilian landscape is curious in that its outcomes were overlooked by humam knowledge until this century. This is precisely what makes an awareness and tracing of the process so stimulating and illustrative.
