Resumo: During the 1920's, Brazilian modernism established itself as a discussion whose central theme was the participation of the national world in the international community, lending the movement its distinctive universalist tone. The modernist movement's characteristic universalism unfolded in two distinct phases. During the first phase (1917-1924), the idea of an immediate insertion of the part (Brazil) into the whole (international community) prevailed. During the second phase (as of 1924), modernist universalism proposed that access to the world scene could be gained through the thematization of the national element. Modernist nationalism is thus a moment of a discussion concerning participation in the broader forum of "cultured nations". It is this presupposition which allows us to understan the movement's project of creating portraits-of-Brazil.

Editora FGV1988-12-01info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/article/view/2165Revista Estudos Históricos; Vol. 1 No. 2 (1988): National Identity; 220-238Revista Estudos Históricos; v. 1 n. 2 (1988): Identidade Nacional; 220-2382178-14940103-2186reponame:Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro)instname:Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV)instacron:FGVporhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/article/view/2165/1304Moraes, Eduardo Jardim deinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2017-08-17T18:56:22Zoai:ojs.periodicos.fgv.br:article/2165Revistahttps://periodicos.fgv.br/rehONGhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/oai||biblioteca.digital@fgv.br||eh@fgv.br2178-14940103-2186opendoar:2024-03-06T13:01:39.804Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro) - Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV)true
