Resumo: The different definitions of popular culture can be divided into two main patterns: the first one considers it as an autonomous symbolic system, while to the the second one it is dependant with regard to the dominant culture. These two perspectives have been at the basis of all chronological frames that contrast a supposed golden age of popular culture and a time of banning and restraint when it was disqualified. The article proposes to articulate the two approaches, rather than use them separately. It's a hard task, but the only one possible nowadays.

The article proposes to articulate the two approaches, rather than use them separately. It's a hard task, but the only one possible nowadays. Editora FGV1995-12-01info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/article/view/2005Revista Estudos Históricos; Vol. 8 No. 16 (1995): Culture and Urban History; 179-192Revista Estudos Históricos; v. 8 n. 16 (1995): Cultura e História Urbana; 179-1922178-14940103-2186reponame:Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro)instname:Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV)instacron:FGVporhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/article/view/2005/1144Chartier, Rogerinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2017-06-14T21:03:26Zoai:ojs.periodicos.fgv.br:article/2005Revistahttps://periodicos.fgv.br/rehONGhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/oai||biblioteca.digital@fgv.br||eh@fgv.br2178-14940103-2186opendoar:2024-03-06T13:01:30.582093Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro) - Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV)true
