Resumo: This paper discusses the use of a Web-based collaborative virtual learning environment, which has allowed graduate students of e-commerce classes in the Master of Business Administration Program at the Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration of Getulio Vargas Foundation (Ebape/FGV) to share and socialize their knowledge. The paper presents the structure of this environment, addressing the issues of the students’ participation level, the regional influences on their engagement in this virtual community and the role of the moderator. The paper uses an explanatory case study methodology — to analyze the effective use of internet technology in the development of virtual learning communities, which can enable collaborative work among groups geographically dispersed and within different environments.
