Resumo: The aim of this study is to identify the social and environmental contribution of recycling cooperatives in the management of solid waste after use. This study is an exploratory and qualitative research, developed through multiple case studies conducted in four cooperatives that function as Central Screening of Selective Collection Program in São Paulo. The evidence sources used were interviews, direct observation and documentary research. Research has shown that cooperatives play a significant role in the reverse channel of municipal solid wasteand in mitigating the environmental impact caused by waste, include: increasing the useful life of landfills and the resulting decrease in pollution caused by the improper disposal of waste, reduction of energy expenditure, and decreased extraction of virgin material. Addition to improving the working conditions of its members.

Se trata de una investigación exploratoria y cualitativa, desarrollada por medio de estudios de casos múltiples realizados en cuatro Centrales de Selección del Programa de Recolección Selectiva en el municipio de São Paulo. Las fuentes de evidencia utilizadas fueron entrevistas, observación directa e investigación documental. La investigación mostró que las cooperativas tienen un papel importante en el canal reverso de los residuos sólidos urbanos y en la consecuente mitigación del impacto ambiental provocado por los residuos. Se destacan: el aumento de la vida útil de los rellenos sanitarios; la disminución de la disposición incorrecta de esos residuos; la reducción del gasto de energía y la disminución de la extracción de materia prima virgen, además de la mejoría de las condiciones de trabajo de los cooperados.O objetivo desse trabalho é identificar a contribuição social e ambiental das cooperativas de reciclagem para os canais reversos de resíduos sólidos pós-consumo. Trata-se de uma pesquisa exploratória e qualitativa, desenvolvida por meio de estudos de casos múltiplos realizados em quatro Centrais de Triagem do Programa de Coleta Seletiva no município de São Paulo. As fontes de evidências utilizadas foram entrevistas, observação direta e pesquisa documental. A pesquisa mostrou que as cooperativas têm papel importante no canal reverso dos resíduos sólidos urbanos e na consequente mitigação do impacto ambiental provocado por resíduos.
