Resumo: This note measures inattention in a novel setting, an information commons. Employing a dataset related to daily transactions in libraries, we compare the compliance behavior of library users over weekdays. If inattention affects rule compliance, then one would expect greater return delays in periods of potentially higher inattention, such as the day before weekends, holidays, and exam weeks. We report the occurrence of a “Friday effect”: inattention, as measured by delays in returning checked out books, is consistently higher on Fridays. There is no evidence of inattention in dates near holidays, or exam weeks.

Employing a large dataset compiling daily transactionsin libraries, we compare a specific compliance behavior of libraryusers over weekdays. If inattention affects rule compliance, thenone would plausibly expect greater return delays in periods ofpotentially higher inattention, such as the day before weekends, holidays, and exam weeks. We found robust evidence of a day ofthe week effect: inattention, as approximately measured by delaysin returning checked out books, is consistently higher on Fridays.Meanwhile, there is no evidence of such an inattentive behavior indates near holidays, or exam weeksEGV EPGE2022-06-30info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionArticlesArtigosapplication/pdfhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/rbe/article/view/81497Revista Brasileira de Economia; Vol. 76 No. 1 (2022): JAN - MARRevista Brasileira de Economia; v. 76 n. 1 (2022): JAN - MAR1806-91340034-7140reponame:Revista Brasileira de Economia (Online)instname:Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV)instacron:FGVenghttps://periodicos.fgv.br/rbe/article/view/81497/81072Copyright (c) 2022 Revista Brasileira de Economiainfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessAlbergaria, MatheusLima, Gilberto Tadeu2022-06-30T19:54:57Zoai:ojs.periodicos.fgv.br:article/81497Revistahttps://periodicos.fgv.br/rbe/https://periodicos.fgv.br/rbe/oai||rbe@fgv.br1806-91340034-7140opendoar:2024-03-06T13:03:51.379778Revista Brasileira de Economia (Online) - Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV)true
