Resumo: The privatization of state companies is one of the basic points of the economic program of the government. This study aims at analising the competition aspects of the privatization program in two dimensions: the degree with which the competitive environment affects the performance of the firms and the consequences in the market strucuture of the form of conducting the privatization process. For these objectives, this work will be divided in two parts: the analysis of performance of the National Privatization Program (PND) and the evaluation of the program in the light of Economic Theory and the recent international experience. Some general policy recommendations are indicated at the final section.
