Use of medicinal plants in dentistry: a cross-sectional study

Resumo: The aim of this study was to analyze the perception of patients treated at Clínica Odontológica Unifacvest regarding the use of medicinal plants for dental purposes. A questionnaire was applied to 113 patients, in the period from February to March 2020. The data were tabulated in the SPSS software version 2016 and expressed through frequency. The predominant sample was female (61.9%), where 54.9% of participants reported using medicinal plants to treat oral problems, with toothache (21.0%) being the most reported. 87.1% said they had improved the initial complaint, mallow (Malva sylvestris) was the most cited plant (53.7%) through mouthwash (48.5%) and as for those who indicated treatment, 63.5% reported have been by family, neighbors and acquaintances or friends. The number of recommendations by dental surgeons was 9.6%, with large numbers of patients making use of it through popular knowledge, thus suggesting training for such professionals regarding use.

Foi aplicado um questionário a 113 pacientes, no período de fevereiro e março de 2020. Os dados foram tabulados no software SPSS versão 2016 e expressos por meio de frequência. A amostra predominante foi do sexo feminino (61,9%), onde 54,9% dos participantes relataram fazer a utilização de plantas medicinais para o tratamento de problemas bucais, sendo dor de dente (21,0%) o mais relatado. 87,1% afirmaram ter melhorado da queixa inicial, a malva (Malva sylvestris) foi a planta mais citada (53,7%) através de bochecho (48,5%) e quanto a quem indicou o tratamento, 63,5% referiu ter sido por familiares, vizinhos e conhecidos ou amigos.
