Socioeconomic and anthropometric characteristics and evaluation of workers’ food quality in an agribusiness company in the Alto Paranaíba region–MG

Resumo: The objectives of this study were twofold: evaluate the nutritional quality of meals consumed by employees of an agricultural industry and to assess the nutritional status of those employees. The meal quality was evaluated by diet quality index (DQI) and nutritional status of workers was assessed on the basis of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and body fat percentage (BFP). Results showed that in workers, on average females have high values of BMI, WC and BFP. In addition, females have tendency to be 3.9-fold overweight in comparison to males. Lunch quality on the basis of DQI was at the category of “need for improvement” as it contained excess of fat and sodium; and an inadequate supply of carbohydrates. In addition, the constituents of the basic basket were also inadequate as they contained a low percentage of carbohydrates and proteins along with extra fat and sodium. In general, these results showed the need for a broad implementation and regulation of public policies for the promotion of a healthier diet and obesity control program in workers.

In general, these results showed the need for a broad implementation and regulation of public policies for the promotion of a healthier diet and obesity control program in workers.Trata-se de estudo exploratório, descritivo, transversal com abordagem quantitativa cujo objetivo foi avaliar a qualidade nutricional das refeições consumidas por trabalhadores de uma agroindústria, levando em consideração a situação nutricional dos mesmos. O estado nutricional dos trabalhadores foi avaliado por meio do índice de massa corporal (IMC), perímetro da cintura (PC) e porcentagem de gordura corporal (%GC). A qualidade da refeição foi analisada por meio do Índice de Qualidade da Refeição (IQR). A análise dos parâmetros antropométricos evidenciou que as mulheres apresentaram em média maiores valores para IMC, PC e %GC, para além de apresentarem 3,9 vezes mais chances de terem excesso de peso quando comparadas aos colaboradores do sexo masculino. Em relação à refeição, com base no valor médio dos resultados para IQR houve um enquadramento da mesma na categoria “refeição que necessita de melhoria”. O almoço fornecido no local de trabalho apresentava excesso de gordura total e sódio, além de insuficiente oferta de carboidratos. Em relação aos constituintes da cesta básica, também foram observadas inadequações, como o baixo percentual de carboidratos e proteínas, paralelamente à presença excessiva de lipídios e sódio.
