SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS MODEL IN THE BANKING SERVICES SECTOR: A STUDY IN PUBLIC BANKS

Resumo: The adoption of correct socio-environmental practices is becoming a necessary imperative in all sectors of the economy, including the banking sector. Through a qualitative, descriptive research, the present article analyzed how public banks innovate to incorporate sustainability into their business models, using the archetypes of a sustainable business model proposed by Yip and Bocken (2018). Interviews were conducted with managers of three bank branches, in addition to consulting secondary data, obtained through public reports published by the institutions from 2013 to 2018. The results indicate that Brazilian public banks have important technological innovations for sustainability, some social innovations that seek to improve the quality of life of the population and the environment and organizational innovations that allow institutions to collaborate with sustainable development through the way they organize their activities.

Por medio de una investigación cualitativa, de naturaleza descriptiva, el presente artí­culo analizó cómo los bancos públicos innovan para incorporar la sustentabilidad en sus modelos de negocio, utilizando los arquetipos de modelo de negocios sustentables propuestos por Yip y Bocken (2018). Se realizaron entrevistas con gerentes de tres agencias bancarias, además de consulta a datos secundarios, obtenidos por medio de informes públicos divulgados por las instituciones en el perí­odo de 2013 a 2018. Los resultados indican que los bancos públicos brasileños poseen innovaciones tecnológicas importantes para la sostenibilidad, algunas innovaciones sociales que buscan mejorar la calidad de vida de la población y del medio ambiente e innovaciones organizativas que permiten a las instituciones colaborar con el desarrollo sostenible a través de la forma en que organizan sus actividades.A adoção de práticas socioambientais corretas estão se tornando um imperativo necessário em todos os setores da economia, dentre eles o setor bancário. Por meio de uma pesquisa qualitativa, de natureza descritiva, o presente artigo analisou como os bancos públicos inovam para incorporar a sustentabilidade em seus modelos de negócio, utilizando os arquétipos de modelo de negócios sustentável propostos por Yip e Bocken (2018). Foram realizadas entrevistas com gerentes de três agências bancárias de instituições públicas, além de consulta à dados secundários, obtidos por meio de relatórios públicos divulgados pelas instituições no perí­odo de 2013 à 2018.
