A água na linguagem humana de sociedades arcaicas e primitivas é um duplo. Tal duplicação se dá justamente pelo modo como o homem decodifica os objetos que o cercam. Comparação entre o poder da água e o fogo. Neste ensaio, em perspectiva comparada, abordaremos as relações da água com a vida e a morte, em sentido mítico e religioso, pesquisando, interdisciplinarmente, pontos de vista da filosofia, da linguística, da mitologia, da expressão literária e dos estudos sobre o simbolismo da linguagem, além do diálogo intertextual, alusivo ou como citação, entre os poetas gregos e romanos da antiguidade. Rios como culto religioso em diversas partes do mundo. A etimologia dos nomes de rios como simbolismo no imaginário da tradição cultural e religiosa dos povos. A viagem de Eneias e os rios no Hades, na Eneida de Vergílio. O espelho da água como ilusão para Narciso, nas Metamorfoses de Ovídio. Palavras-chave: Etimologia. Simbolismo. Such duplication gives precisely by the way as a man gets the together objects besides him. Comparison between the power of the water and the fire. In this paper, in compared perspective, we will aim to tackle the relations of the water with the life and the death, in mythical and religious sense, researching by interdisciplinary interlocution, points of view from the philosophy, from the linguistics,  from the mythology, from the literary expression and from the studies on the symbolism of the language, in addition to the intertextual dialogue, allusive or like quotation, between the Greek and Roman philosophers and poets from the Antiquity. Rivers like religious cult in diverse parts of the world. The etymology of the names of rivers like symbolism in the imaginary of the cultural and religious tradition of the peoples. The trip of Aeneas and the rivers in the Hades, in Virgil's Aeneid. The mirror of the water like illusion for Narcissus, in the Ovid's Metamorphoses. Keywords: Etymology. Symbolism.
