O trabalho em questão tem como objetivo analisar o romance The Rainbow (1915), de D.H. Lawrence, e sua tradução para o cinema em 1989, através do filme homônimo dirigido por Ken Russell. Essa análise tem a intenção de verificar algumas escolhas do diretor e as consequências que essas escolhas tiveram no desenvolvimento dos personagens e da narrativa fílmica. O foco será em Ursula, personagem representativa do universo literário do autor, considerando a forma como é construída no livro e no filme, e como as decisões do diretor influenciaram na sua tradução para as telas. Partimos da ideia de que alguns apagamentos na narrativa fílmica mudaram a perspectiva de construção de Ursula para o espectador. A análise será feita por meio de passagens do livro que serão usadas para comparar com as respectivas cenas do filme, para, então, serem demonstradas as diferenças entre o texto de partida e a sua tradução. Entre os autores utilizados para a fundamentação teórica estão Dan Jacobson (1973), com a discussão sobre D. H. Lawrence e a sociedade moderna, James Wood (2007) e sua introdução sobre o livro The Rainbow, Louis K. Greiff (2001), e a discussão sobre Lawrence no cinema, assim como textos do próprio autor que ilustram suas ideias. Palavras chave: Cinema. D. H. Lawrence. Tradução. ABSTRACT  This article has the objective of analyzing the novel The Rainbow (1915), by D.H. Lawrence, and its adaptation to the cinema in 1989, by Ken Russell. This analysis intends to verify some of the director’s choices and their consequences to the development of the characters and the filmic narrative. The focus will be on Ursula, a representative character of the author’s literary universe, considering how she is portrayed in both the book and the movie, and how the director’s decisions influenced in her translation into screen. We start from the idea that some deletions in the filmic narrative changed the perspective of Ursula’s construction to spectators. The analysis will be based upon passages from the book which will be used to compare with the corresponding scenes from the film to show differences between the source text and its translation. As theoretical background it will be used works by Dan Jacobson (1973) and his discussion about D. H. Lawrence and the modern society, James Wood (2007), and his introduction about the book The Rainbow, Louis K. Greiff (2001), and his work about Lawrence in the cinema, as well as texts by the author himself that illustrate his ideas. Key words: Cinema. D. H. Lawrence. Translation.
