Resumo: In Brazil, bean production of Mapotiba region was 255,600 tons in 2014, harvested 430,900 hectares with an average yield of 593 kg/ha. Such production and area represented, respectively, 9.5% and 22.2% of the national total. The production of 777,500 tonnes of upland rice was harvested in 533.0000 hectares, representing respectively 42.8% and 58.3% of production and the national rice area in the highlands. The average productivity of upland rice in Brazil was 1,986 kg/ha, and in the region of Mapotiba, of 1,459 kg/ha. The Mapotiba complex, considered as the last agricultural frontier of Brasilcompreende of the states of Piauí, Maranhão, Tocantins and Bahia. This shows municipalities with producers undercapitalized, particularly in family farming. Although, it is a haven where can develop a potential in agriculture commodities, such as the savannas of the central plateau region for soybean production, bioenergy and fiber. This article aims at a comparative analysis of the situation of the production of rice and beans. These elements are basic feeding of most of the population, contrasting them with the lowest Municipal Human Development Index, in Mapotiba complex.JEL-Code | O13; Q18; R11.
