Resumo: This quantitative cohort study aimed to analyze the main factors associated with dropping out of the optometry degree taught at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México at the Facultad de estudios superiors Iztacala. (FES-I). The main findings of the research pointed out that the highest dropout rate is mainly due to factors related to career changes. The problem arises before the students enter to the degree because the 53.1% of them didn´t choose the optometry degree as one of their options for the higher level; as well as the economic factor is a noteworthy point, since 43.8% stated that their greatest concern was that the materials that they requested during the degree and that are necessary for the clinical practice that are carried out were awfully expensive.

(FES-I).  Los principales hallazgos de la investigación apuntaron que el mayor índice de deserción se da principalmente por factores relacionados a cambios de carrera. La problemática que se presenta surge desde antes de entrar a la licenciatura ya que el 53.1% no colocaron a la licenciatura en optometría como una de sus opciones de ingreso al nivel superior; así como también el factor económico es un punto destacable, ya que el 43.8% manifestó que su mayor preocupación era que los materiales que pedían durante la carrera y que son necesarios para práctica clínica que se realiza fueran muy costosos.Este trabalho, de abordagem quantitativa, teve por objetivo analisar os principais fatores associados à evasão na graduação em Optometria ofertada na Universidade Nacional Autônoma do México, na Faculdade de Estudos Superiores Iztacala (FES-I). Os principais achados da pesquisa apontaram que o maior índice de deserção ocorre, principalmente, por fatores relacionados às trocas de curso.
