Resumo: Compound odontoma is a benign odontogenic lesion characterized by small denticles similar to normal teeth, resulting from an interruption in the typical development of dental tissues during embryonic formation. Generally asymptomatic, odontomas are commonly identified accidentally in routine radiographic examinations, being more prevalent in the anterior region of the maxilla. Surgical removal is the standard therapeutic approach to prevent complications, such as tooth impaction and aesthetic changes, with a good prospect of success and rare occurrence of recurrences after the intervention. Originating from cells of the dental epithelium, mesenchyme and dental papilla during fetal development, its classification into compound and complex allows different clinical presentations to be distinguished. Advances in therapeutic options over time reflect progress in understanding and managing this dental condition, with improvements in surgical techniques and genetic and molecular research contributing to a deeper understanding. The adoption of adequate pre- and post-operative care is essential for a satisfactory recovery after odontoma excision, involving an accurate assessment of the location of the lesion, appropriate use of anesthesia, careful execution of the surgical technique and regular follow-up to monitor healing and identify possible complications. It is essential that the treatment of composite odontoma is carried out by trained professionals, aiming to guarantee successful results and minimize the risk of complications.
