Resumo: Periodontitis is related as a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis. Therefore, the mechanism of action in which periodontitis can alter or aggravate the course of cardiovascular pathologies has been demonstrated, considering risk factors such as age and smoking. Clinical trials indicate the possibility of a relationship between periodontitis microorganisms present in atherosclerosis and the high level of serum lipoproteins that could influence atheroma formation. Non-exhaustive and exhaustive periodontal treatment aims at scaling and root planing of periodontal pockets, taking into account the amount of periodontopathogenic bacteria, examining the serum levels of inflammatory markers of cardiovascular disease. This literature review aims to determine whether there is a relationship between periodontitis and atherosclerosis.

Sendo assim, tem sido demonstrado o mecanismo de ação na qual a periodontite pode alterar ou agravar o curso das patologias cardiovasculares, tendo em vista fatores de risco tais como a idade e o tabagismo. Os ensaios clínicos direcionam a possibilidade de ter uma relação entre os microrganismos da periodontite estarem presentes na aterosclerose e o nível elevado de lipoproteínas séricas poderia influenciar a formação do ateroma. O tratamento periodontal não cirúrgico e cirúrgico tem como objetivo a raspagem e o alisamento radicular das bolsas periodontais reduzindo a quantidade de bactérias periodontopatogênicas, diminuindo os níveis séricos dos marcadores inflamatórios da doença cardiovascular.
