Prevalence of overweight and obesity in children attending a day care center in the city of Porto Alegre and the relationship with physical activity and dietary intake

Introduction: This study investigated the characteristics of an environment that causes obesity ina nursery in the city of Porto Alegre, southern Brazil including dietary intake, physical activity, motor development and its relation to nutritional status of children 3-8 years old. Materials and Methods: During two weeks were monitored and recording the activities of the nursery including the behavior of teachers and students forward power, and physical activities, and the evaluation of the menu of the day care that occurred duringa week analyzing macro and micronutrients. We used descriptive statistics and resources for comparison between groups analysis of variance test for continuity via Tukey post hoc was used. The level of p < 0.05 was used to determine statistical significance. Results: Just over half (51.0%) of the children were male, while about 55.0% were between 3 and 6 years old. Overweight was present in 56.8% of children. With regard to motor development, more than half of the sample had a poor or very poor development. Discussion and Conclusion: We identified that the environmental obesity characteristics, such as restricted physical space coupled with few opportunities for physical activity, moreover, the food offered had a high lipid content, low fiber, fruits and vegetables.
