Resumo: On 21st century, gender equality became increasingly important to multilateral organizations concerned with extension and development in rural communities, especially when related to interventions towards poverty alleviation, food security and agroecological production. The present study aimed to analyze the importance of women’s inclusion in extension activities towards the development of rural areas, with respect to “Sustainable Backyards” Project. Mixing qualitative and quantitative aproacches, the case study was conducted in the city of ManoelViana/RS, through observations, interviews, forms and documents. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. The “Sustainable Backyards” Project did not forecast the theme of gender equality: there was not an orientation towardsrural women. Even though the Project was allocated in the sphere of their activities in the division of labor at the establishment, women were dissociated by the commodification of Sustainable Backyards. Thus, it was concluded that the potential of Sustainable Backyards Project was not fully enjoyed due to the lack of considerations on gender equality.
