The rural population of Serra Geral’s territory in Minas Gerais. Peasants or family farmers?

Resumo: We seek in this work, using data and information collected by, Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the Brazilian Company for Technical Assistance and Rural Extension of the State of Minas Gerais (MG Emater), drawing a parallel between socio-economic characteristics of small farmers in the territory of Serra Geral in northern Minas Gerais, and the concepts and definitions of peasantry defended by many researchers. Based on the analysis and confrontation of this information, we conclude that the target of the study farmers have behavioral characteristics that allow their classification as "peasants", according to the definitions of some contemporary researchers to modern peasantry. Still argue the need for detailed knowledge of the public to establish public policies that have a positive impact on that reality.

Still argue the need for detailed knowledge of the public to establish public policies that have a positive impact on that reality.Neste trabalho buscamos, por meio de dados e informações levantados pelo Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) e pela Empresa Brasileira de Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural do Estado de Minas Gerais (EMATER MG), estabelecer um paralelo entre as características socioeconômicas dos pequenos produtores rurais do território da Serra Geral na região Norte de Minas Gerais, e os conceitos e definições de campesinato defendidos por diversos estudiosos do tema. Baseado na análise e na confrontação destas informações, concluímos que os agricultores alvo do estudo apresentam características comportamentais que permitem a sua designação como “camponeses”, de acordo com as definições de alguns estudiosos contemporâneos para o moderno campesinato.
