Racial quotas: open paths between the “machete” and the “scalpel”

Resumo: | In the early 2000s, the debates and clashes over the adoption of affirmative actions, especially through the reservation of vacancies for the black population, the so-called racial quotas, strained the academic scenario. In this article, I use the memory of my academic trajectory from student to university professor during the process of discussion and implementation of racial quotas in Brazil to highlight facts and debates on the topic in focus. In the period between 2000-2012, I will name it as the open path “to the machete” in favor of racial quotas, in which the intensification and polarization contrary to the discussion were felt, as well as the confrontation with the adverse context. From 2012 to the present, I will name it the “scalpel” moment in which the affirmative action policy has legal support and effectiveness in Brazilian society, but it is still fought by its detractors. |

En este artículo, utilizo la memoria de mi trayectoria académica de estudiante a profesor universitario durante el proceso de discusión e implementación de las cuotas raciales en Brasil para resaltar hechos y debates sobre el tema en foco. En el período 2000-2012 lo nombraré el camino abierto “al machete” a favor de las cuotas raciales, en el que se sintió la intensificación y polarización contraria a la discusión, así como el enfrentamiento con el contexto adverso. Desde 2012 hasta el presente, lo llamaré el momento del “bisturí” en que la política de acción afirmativa tiene respaldo legal y efectividad en la sociedad brasileña, pero aún es combatida por sus detractores.No início dos anos 2000, os debates e embates sobre a adoção de ações afirmativas, especialmente via reserva de vagas para a população negra, as chamadas cotas raciais, tensionavam o cenário acadêmico. Neste artigo recorro à memória da minha trajetória acadêmica de estudante à professora universitária durante o processo de discussão e implementação das cotas raciais no Brasil para evidenciar fatos e debates sobre o tema em foco. No período compreendido entre 2000-2012, vou nomeá-lo como o caminho aberto “a facão” em prol das cotas raciais, no qual o acirramento e polarização contrários à discussão se fizeram sentir, bem como o enfrentamento ao contexto adverso. A partir de 2012 até o momento presente, vou nomeá-lo como o momento do “bisturi” em que a política de ações afirmativas possui amparo legal e efetividade na sociedade brasileira, mas ainda é combatida por seus detratores.
