Resumo: The article aims to analyze the work of social workers at a hospital in a city in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro State (Brazil), through the study of the professional profile, routine work and demands targeted to Social Work. Methodologically, it was based on bibliographic and field research. The results indicate that the work of social workers can be characterized by administrative and assistance activities, based on the immediate and singularity of the subjects, through information and, to a lesser extent, an attempt to understand the social determinants of their illness. In this context, the institutional organization, centered in the medical-biological treatment of the disease, is presented as one of the objective determinants of the work.

Metodológicamente, se basó en investigaciones bibliográficas y de campo. Los resultados indican que la labor de los trabajadores sociales puede caracterizarse por actividades administrativas y de asistencia, basadas en el inmediatismo y en la singularidad de los sujetos, a través de la información y, en menor medida, de un intento de comprender los determinantes sociales de su enfermedad. En este contexto, la organización institucional, centrada en el tratamiento médico-biológico de la enfermedad, se presenta como uno de los determinantes objetivos del trabajo.O artigo objetiva analisar o trabalho das assistentes sociais em hospital, em uma cidade do Norte Fluminense, por meio do estudo do perfil profissional, da rotina de trabalho e demandas direcionadas ao Serviço Social.
