Resumo: This article analyzes student permanence in the context of affirmative action in higher education, based on the case of Federal University of Bahia. The permanence of students in higher education is an absent theme in the field of research on affirmative action in Brazil. Permanence policy, regarding to student assistance, gained relevance in parallel to the establishment of affirmative action policies in public universities and, in particular, after the enactment of Law 12.711 (BRASIL, 2012). The research was based on documental analysis of actions and programs of the federal government of the national policy of student assistance and UFBA’s institutional documents. Starting with a brief contextualization of affirmative action in Brazil and the emergence of student assistance policies, the research is dedicated to analyzing the case of the Federal University of Bahia, highlighting the institution's affirmative action program and student assistance policies, as well as the students’ socioeconomic profiles. Among the research results, the dimensioning of the impacts of the permanence policy stands out in order to measure the impacts of the permanence policy, therefore contributing to the debate about the importance of student permanence for promotion of social justice.

La permanencia de los estudiantes de cuota en la educación superior es un tema aún poco explorado en el campo de la investigación sobre acción afirmativa en Brasil. La política de permanencia, en lo que respecta a la asistencia a los estudiantes, ganó relevancia en paralelo al establecimiento de políticas de acción afirmativa en las universidades públicas y, en especial, después de la promulgación de la Ley 12.711 (BRASIL, 2012). La investigación se basó en el análisis documental de acciones y programas del gobierno federal relativo a la política nacional de asistencia a los estudiantes y documentos institucionales de la UFBA. A partir de una breve contextualización de las acciones afirmativas en Brasil y el surgimiento de las políticas de asistencia a los estudiantes, la investigación se dedica a analizar el caso de la Universidad Federal de Bahía, destacando el programa de acción afirmativa y las políticas de asistencia a los estudiantes de la institución, así como el perfil discente. Entre los resultados de la investigación se destaca el dimensionamiento de los impactos de la política de permanencia, contribuyendo así al debate sobre la importancia de la permanencia estudiantil para la promoción de la justicia social.  O presente artigo analisa a permanência estudantil no contexto das ações afirmativas em instituições de ensino superior, a partir do caso da Universidade Federal da Bahia. A permanência de estudantes no ensino superior é um assunto ainda pouco explorado no campo de pesquisa sobre ações afirmativas no Brasil. As políticas de permanência, especialmente no âmbito da assistência estudantil, foram ampliadas em paralelo ao estabelecimento de políticas de ações afirmativas nas universidades e, em especial, após a promulgação da Lei 12.711 (BRASIL, 2012). A pesquisa teve como base a análise documental de ações e programas do governo federal relacionados à política nacional de assistência estudantil, e de documentos institucionais da UFBA. Partindo de uma breve contextualização das ações afirmativas no Brasil e da emergência da política de assistência estudantil, a pesquisa se dedica a analisar o caso da Universidade Federal da Bahia, evidenciando as políticas de ações afirmativas e de assistência estudantil da instituição, assim como o perfil discente.
