Resumo: This work aims to analyse the application of a Problem Based Learning (PBL) on inorganic chemistry 2 course. The case was created based on colours of ruby and sapphire, despite both being derived from corundum.  The methodology consisted in the elaboration of a case, application with chemistry students and evaluation of the pedagogical proposal. The results showed that the students still did not know the PBL, however it was well evaluated by them. The course is very theoretical and the use of a real problem seems to have contributed to students´ learning and motivation, since there were more students approved in the course compared to previous years. As there is still a small number of works in the literature that address the concepts of chemical bonds from active methodologies, it is expected that this work will encourage other teachers to use this strategy and create others. Keywords: Problem Based Learning. Coordination Chemistry. Mineral Colours.

Keywords: Problem Based Learning. Coordination Chemistry.
