“Challenges for the education of deaf people in Brazil” according to participants of the National Exam of Upper Secondary Education (Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio - Enem 2017)

Resumo: | Being a milestone in the history of deaf education in Brazil, the essay theme for the 2017 sitting of the National Exam of Upper Secondary Education (Enem), “Challenges for the education of deaf people in Brazil”, has raised awareness all over the country about a historically neglected segment within the education policies debates. Taking into account the importance of the subject, right after the publicizing of the theme, there was an effort to gather the viewpoint of Enem takers at a large state public school in the city-center of João Pessoa/PB. Thus, 49 participants were interviewed immediately upon exiting the exam venue, having turned in their essays. The viewpoints gathered, analyzed within the perspective of the Cultural Studies and the Deaf Studies, reveal that the main challenges for the education of deaf people were: the implementation of the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) as a compulsory curricular subject in school, the teacher training, the institutional lack of preparation, the social and labor inclusion, and the fight against prejudice. |

Diante da importância do fato, logo após a divulgação do tema, decidiu-se conhecer a ótica de pessoas que realizaram o Enem numa grande escola pública estadual no centro da cidade de João Pessoa/PB. Para tanto, foram entrevistados 49 participantes do exame, quando deixavam o local de prova, após a realização da redação.
