This article is an offshoot of the research A literatura infanto-juvenil nas águas da inclusão escolar: navegar é preciso, developed at the Graduate Program in Education of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, from March 2007 to March 2009. The aim of this study was to analyze children’s literature in Portuguese, with an emphasis on books whose characters are individuals with disabilities from the perspective of inclusive education and the aesthetics of reception in children’s literature, approaching the articulations and relations between the constituent elements of the books (verbal and nonverbal texts) through a dialogic approach. This study revised the different ways by which people with disabilities have been nominated over the years in Brazil, based on the discourse by Januzzi (2005) and texts by Baptista (2003) and Laclau (2006), among others, quoted in the study, which may allow a number of conclusions from the creation of the metaphor a ship / a school for all.
