The displacements of heritage: the heterotopia of the Beijo Eterno

Resumo: What happens when a monument is moved? This article investigates the controversies about the location of the sculpture Beijo Eterno, by William Zadig. Created on demand by the Liga Nacionalista de São Paulo as a tribute to Olavo Bilac, this sculpture was part of a monument inspired by his poetry. However, between 1922 and 1966, the sculptures of the Monument to Olavo Bilac were repositioned in the city: the Beijo Eterno was placed on Av. Paulista, in the neighborhoods of Cambuci and Pinheiros, on Av. Nove de Julho and in public warehouses until it was finally installed in the Largo de São Francisco. The discomfort involved political, moral and religious elements, making it subject to analysis by Foucault’s notion of heterotopia. The sources are the following periodicals: Folha de São Paulo, O Estado de São Paulo and A Gazeta.

Creada a petición de la Liga Nacionalista de São Paulo como homenaje a Olavo Bilac, la escultura fue inspirada en su poesía. Sin embargo, entre 1922 y 1966, las esculturas del Monumento a Olavo Bilac fueron reposicionadas en la ciudad: el Beijo Eterno fue colocado en la Avenida Paulista, en los barrios de Cambuci y Pinheiros, en la Avenida Nove de Julho y en almacenes públicos hasta su instalación definitiva en el Largo de São Francisco. El malestar involucró elementos políticos, morales y religiosos, haciéndola sujeta a análisis por la noción de heterotopía de Foucault. Son fuentes de este artículo las publicaciones periódicas: Folha de São Paulo, O Estado de São Paulo y A Gazeta.O que acontece quando um monumento é deslocado? Este artigo investiga as polêmicas sobre a localização da escultura Beijo Eterno, de William Zadig. Criada por demanda da Liga Nacionalista de São Paulo como uma homenagem a Olavo Bilac, esta escultura era inspirada na sua poesia. Porém, entre 1922 e 1966, as esculturas do Monumento a Olavo Bilac foram reposicionadas na cidade: o Beijo Eterno foi colocado na Av. Paulista, nos bairros de Cambuci e Pinheiros, na Av. Nove de Julho e em depósitos públicos até finalmente ser instalado no Largo de São Francisco. O desconforto envolvia elementos políticos, morais e religiosos, tornando passível de uma análise pela noção de heterotopia de Foucault.
