This paper intends to bring to light the importance of public policies contained in Law No. 9,985 / 2000 which discusses the National System of Nature Conservation Units (SNUC). Since their promulgation, environmental conservation units suffer from problems in the creation, implementation and management, resulting in the ineffectiveness of public policies. Faced with these problems, there is a need to determine which policies are being used and to evaluate their real viability for the protection of areas provided by law. Thus, it is necessary to use other policies already foreseen, such as participatory governance, which is based on environmental education and the resolution of conflicts with traditional peoples. Thus, participatory governance acts as the central axis, proving to be the most viable instrument for public policies in protected areas to fulfill their role, so that the SNUC law succeeds in what it proposes.
