FUNERARY PRACTICES IN THE CEMETERY OF ‘PRETOS NOVOS’: SYMBOLIC VIOLENCE AND PANOPTIC POWER STRUCTURE

Resumo: This paper presents the results of thermal alteration analyses on dental remains from the Cemetery of the New Blacks (CPN), designated to receive the bodies of African captives recently arrived in Rio de Janeiro during the 18th and 19th centuries. The burning of bodies was a recurrent practice, performed in order to optimize space due to the increasing demand for burials, as well as to hide the terrible smell of decomposition. The results showed that the bodies were mostly burned at calcination temperature (≥ 650 ºC) and at various stages of decomposition. Through this research, we sought to broaden the understanding of the treatment given to the dead and also to shed light on the structure of power and violence represented by this funerary space.

La quema de cadáveres era una práctica recurrente, realizada con el fin de optimizar el espacio debido a la creciente demanda de enterramientos, así como para ocultar el terrible olor a descomposición. Los resultados mostraron que en su mayoría se quemaron a la temperatura de calcinación (≥ 650 ºC) y en diferentes etapas de descomposición. Esta investigación buscó ampliar la comprensión del trato dado a los muertos, así como arrojar luz sobre la estructura de poder y violencia que representa este espacio funerario.Este artigo apresenta os resultados das análises de alteração térmica nos remanescentes dentários do Cemitério dos Pretos Novos (CPN), designado para receber os corpos dos cativos africanos recém-chegados no Rio de Janeiro durante os séculos XVIII e XIX. A queima dos corpos era uma prática recorrente, performada a fim de otimizar o espaço em função da demanda cada vez maior de sepultamentos, bem como de ocultar o terrível cheiro de decomposição. Os resultados demonstraram que foram queimados, em sua maioria, à temperatura de calcinação (≥ 650 ºC) e em variados estágios de decomposição.
