Child maltreatment is a major public health issue, widely known by it’s impact on physical, social, emotional, behavioral and cognitive development. This thesis investigated the association between child maltreatment and performance on tasks of executive functions (EF) in two studies. The theoretical study systematically reviewed publications that contained empirical data on cognitive tasks and/or neuropsychological tests related to EF in children victims of maltreatment. The empirical study investigated the presence of internalizing and externalizing symptoms, and psychopathological disorders (affective problems, anxiety problems, somatic problems, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and, Opposition Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder) and performance on EF tasks in group of maltreated children in comparison to a control group matched by age and sex. The findings suggest that maltreated children perform below average on tasks assessing working memory and mental flexibility. Also, an important interaction between psychopathology and EF was found, as shown by the association between externalizing problems and neuropsychological tasks of inhibitory control.
