Reading comprehension and phonological awareness: Evidence of validity of their measures

Resumo: This study searched for evidence of validity for measures that evaluate related constructs, namely, Reading comprehension and phonological awareness. A total of 112 second- and fifth-grade children of both sexes between the ages of 6 and 12 years (M = 8,46; SD = 1,68) from a public elementary school in a town in São Paulo participated in the study. The students answered a cloze test, the Phonological awareness assessment and Phonological Awareness Test by Oral Production, the last two being administered individually. The results confirmed the existence of criterion validity incontrasting groups, as the children who obtained high scores on the Phonological Awareness Test by Oral Production also showed significantly higher performance on the cloze test and the Phonological awareness assessment.

Participaram da pesquisa 112 crianças de ambos os gêneros, com idade entre 6 e 12 anos (M = 8,46; DP = 1,68), matriculadas no 2° e no 5° anos do Ensino Fundamental de uma escola pública do interior de São Paulo. Os estudantes foram submetidos ao teste de Cloze, ao Roteiro de Avaliação da Consciência Fonológica e à Prova de Consciência Fonológica por Produção Oral, sendo os dois últimos aplicados individualmente.
