Resumo: The aim of this study was to identify predictors of behavioral intention towards avoiding drinking and driving in college students in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. Accidental sampling, a type of non-probability sampling method, was used to design the questionnaire and to evaluate the intention of 488 students to refrain from drinking and driving. Data showed significant effect of the variables normative beliefs and attitudes and behavioral beliefs as predictors of the intent to adopt a preventive behavior. One of the results obtained suggests that college students are not indiferente to the information received, adopting a critical stance. It also indicated that authorities, parents, and peers can influence avoiding the risky behavior of drinking and driving. The variable gender indicated differences between men and women. The present study suggests the need for effective programs to prevent consumption of alcohol while driving.

Trata-se de dois estudos não probabilísticos do tipo acidental com 488 estudantes, sendo um a construção do questionário e o outro o levantamento da intenção de abster-se de beber e dirigir. Este último permitiu verificar o efeito das variáveis: crenças normativas, atitude e crenças comportamentais, como preditoras da intenção de adotar o comportamento preventivo. Um dos dados obtidos sugere que os universitários não são indiferentes quanto às informações recebidas, construindo uma postura crítica; as autoridades, os pais e os pares são importantes no que diz respeito a evitar o comportamento de beber e dirigir, sendo que a variável gênero mostrou diferenças entre homens e mulheres.
