Resumo: This article aims to bring contributions on the constitution of Biology teaching in Brazil, between 1800 and 1879. The research is documentary, exploratory and sought to analyze specifically pedagogical and variety journals: Marmota da Corte; Semana Ilustrada; A Escola: revista Brasileira de Educação e Ensino (RJ); O Ensino Particular: revista Mensal da Associação dos Professores Particulares (RJ); e Revista do Ensino (RJ). In order to dialogue with the analyses, we approach Michel Foucault's archeogenealogical perspective. From the analysis of the sources, we note two possible conditions for the formation of Biology teaching in Brazil: 1) the public valuation of science and scientific knowledge; along with this, we also see penetrating the 2) idea of progress in the sense of intellectual and economic advancement of the country through the areas of Botany, Zoology and Natural History.

A pesquisa é documental, exploratória e buscou analisar especificamente revistas pedagógicas e de variedades do período: Marmota da Corte; Semana Ilustrada; A Escola: revista Brasileira de Educação e Ensino (RJ); O Ensino Particular: revista Mensal da Associação dos Professores Particulares (RJ); e Revista do Ensino (RJ). Para dialogar com as análises, nos aproximamos da perspectiva arqueo-genealógica de Michel Foucault.
