Paulo Emilio Sales Gomes among his contemporaries (1954-1960)

Resumo: This article analyzes the insertion of Paulo Emilio Sales Gomes in the subfield of cinema criticism in São Paulo through his writings from the second half of the 1950s. For that purpose, we seek to describe the correlation of forces in the cinematographic field. The description of the field allowed us to review the validity of the scheme that divides criticism between “estheticians” and “historical-critics”. Rather than verifying differences in the details of the evaluation method, we argue that criticism in the 1950s was mainly divided between distinct political sensitivities. Thus, the research indicates that Paulo Emilio stands out when traveling between the different groups of critics without fully joining any of the parties. The corpus analyzed in this article was composed of criticisms and essays on cinema published in the press in the 1950s. We used Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of field and habitus in the analysis in order to indicate the social constraints that explain, in part, the critical positions taken in the period, as well as tools of French discourse analysis.

La descripción del campo permitió revisar la vigencia del esquema que divide la crítica entre “esteticistas” y “crítico-históricos”. En lugar de encontrar diferencias en los detalles del método de evaluación, argumentamos que la crítica en la década de 1950 se dividió principalmente entre diferentes sensibilidades políticas. Así, la investigación indica que Paulo Emilio se destaca cuando transita entre los diferentes grupos de crítica sin adherirse del todo a ninguna de las partes. El corpus analizado en este artículo está compuesto por reseñas y ensayos sobre cine publicados en revistas de la década de 1950, así como por instrumentos de análisis del discurso de origen francés.Este artigo analisa a inserção de Paulo Emilio Sales Gomes no subcampo da crítica de cinema paulista por meio de seus escritos da segunda metade dos anos 1950. Para tanto, buscamos, de início, descrever a correlação de forças no campo cinematográfico. A descrição do campo nos permitiu rever a validade do esquema que divide a crítica entre “esteticistas” e “críticos-históricos”. Antes que verificar diferenças no pormenor do método de avaliação, argumentamos que a crítica na década de 1950 se dividia, sobretudo, entre sensibilidades políticas distintas. Assim, a pesquisa indica que Paulo Emilio se destaca ao trafegar entre os diferentes grupos da crítica sem aderir integralmente a quaisquer das partes. O corpus analisado neste artigo foi composto por críticas e ensaios sobre cinema publicados na imprensa na década de 1950.
