What do elder women and men think about their aging?

Resumo: This article is a part of a research developed between 2002 and 2003 in the cityof Santa Cruz do Sul in order to verify what are the social representations of the elderly for people over 60 years old. 150 elders took part on the study. 20 of them were interviewed (10 men and 10 women). The results obtained were analyzed trough the Bardin's Technique (1988). The interviewed are part of acquaintance groups of elders enrolled on the city hall and also of groups from UNISC – University of Santa Cruz do Sul and directed to this population. The results show a positive image of elderly seem as a natural process, but the women´s vision of the men of their age are negative, they say that men “are lazy, don´t take care of themselves and become inactive after the retirement”. Social representations.Este artigo é um recorte de uma pesquisa que foi desenvolvida entre os anos de 2002 e 2003 no município de Santa Cruz do Sul e que teve como objetivo verificar quais são as representações sociais de velhice que as pessoas acima de 60 anos possuem. Fizeram parte do estudo 150 idosos, e dentre estes, 20 foram entrevistados (10 homens e 10 mulheres), sendo que os resultados obtidos foram analisados através da técnica de Bardin (1988). Os entrevistados fazem parte de grupos de convivência para a Terceira Idade, cadastrados na Prefeitura Municipal, bem como de grupos existentes na Universidade de Santa Cruz do Sul – UNISC, direcionados a esta população. Nos resultados, encontramos uma imagem positiva da velhice, vista como um processo natural; porém a visão que as mulheres possuem dos homens de sua geração é negativa. Para elas, eles “são desleixados, não se cuidam e tornam-se inativos após a aposentadoria”. Palavras chave – Pesquisa. Idosos.
