Attention and emotions: A binomial for reading teaching

Resumo: | Reading comprehension depends on elements concerned to the text, the author and the reader. In addition to linguistic knowledge and knowledge of the world, the individual's cognitive apparatus assumes vital importance in the reading process. Memory is a cognitive component of fundamental importance for learning processes and to which researchers have dedicated many studies. However, memory process is strictly related to attention and strongly influenced by emotions. Attention and emotions, in turn, have a very close relationship, as emotions can influence the attentional focus. This article presents three factors pointed out in the literature that can modulate the relationship between attention and emotions — namely, the relevance of the to-be ignored stimuli, the motivation and the characteristics of individuals. After discussing those elements, it is investigated how the conjugation these elements can benefit the teacher in planning reading comprehension lessons. |

Além de conhecimento linguístico e conhecimento de mundo, o aparato cognitivo do indivíduo assume vital importância no processo de leitura. A memória é um componente cognitivo de fundamental importância para a aprendizagem e ao qual pesquisadores têm dedicado muitos estudos. Porém, a memória é um componente que depende da atenção para a sua formação e sofre grande influência das emoções. Atenção e emoções, por sua vez, apresentam uma inter-relação bastante estreita, na medida em que as emoções podem influenciar o foco atencional. São apresentados neste artigo três fatores apontados pela literatura que podem modular a relação entre atenção e emoções — a saber, a relevância de estímulos distratores, a motivação e as características individuais dos sujeitos — e , na sequência, discute-se de que modo a conjugação destes elementos pode beneficiar o professor no planejamento do ensino da leitura.
