“There is no sun without shadows”: Virtues, impasses and limitations in documentary research on childhood and its education in Portugal

Resumo: The visibility of childhood in contemporary Western societies, also felt in the Social Sciences and, in particular, in education research, is expressed in a growing area of studies dedicated to Childhood Education, which underlines the importance of documentary research to clarify and disseminate the “state of the art” or the “state of knowledge” produced. In this text, changes in thinking and practices regarding childhood and their education were scrutinized in documentary sources such as academic production (master’s dissertations and doctoral theses), and in a documentary collection on the education and teaching press. Each of these sources provides valuable insights for observing the state of knowledge. In addition, the exploration of statistics on children as a documentary source, in order to grasp the lexicon with which they are referenced in statistical observation, and which went beyond to other fields. Accordingly, by presenting a set of documentary research in sources that allow the identification of the “state of the art” and the reflections raised, the authors return to their work on children, childhood and their education in Portugal, proposing: i) to present the various sources observed and discuss their virtues, impasses and limitations in this research modality; ii) to interrogate the search criteria - age -; iii) to explore the repertoire of designations found to classify and order the diversity of children and their biosocial conditions in childhood, thus contributing to the social (re) construction of childhood and children’s education.

En este texto, los cambios en el pensamiento y las prácticas relacionadas con la infancia y su educación se analizaron en fuentes documentales como la producción académica (disertaciones de maestría y tesis doctorales), y en una colección documental relacionada con la prensa educativa y pedagógica. Cada una de estas fuentes proporciona información valiosa para observar el estado del conocimiento. Además, la exploración de estadísticas sobre niños como fuente documental, con el fin de comprender el léxico con el que se hace referencia en la observación estadística, y que fue más allá de otros campos. En consecuencia, al presentar un conjunto de investigaciones documentales en fuentes que permiten identificar el “estado del arte” y las reflexiones planteadas, los autores vuelven a su trabajo sobre los niños, la infancia y su educación en Portugal, proponiendo: i) presentar las diversas fuentes observadas y discutir sus virtudes, impases y limitaciones en esta modalidad de investigación; ii) interrogar los criterios de búsqueda - edad; iii) explorar el repertorio de designaciones encontradas para clasificar y ordenar la diversidad de los niños y sus condiciones biosociales en la infancia, contribuyendo así a la (re) construcción social de la infancia y la educación infantil.A visibilidade da infância nas sociedades ocidentais contemporâneas, igualmente sentida nas Ciências Sociais e, em particular, na pesquisa em educação, expressa-se numa crescente área de estudos dedicada à Educação da Infância, em que se sublinha a importância das pesquisas documentais para esclarecer e divulgar o “estado da arte” ou o “estado do conhecimento” produzido. Neste texto, as mudanças no pensamento e nas práticas relativas à infância e sua educação foram escrutinadas em fontes documentais como a produção académica (dissertações de mestrado e teses de doutoramento), e num acervo documental relativo à imprensa de educação e ensino. Cada uma dessas fontes fornece subsídios valiosos para a observação do estado do conhecimento. Acresce a exploração das estatísticas sobre as crianças como fonte documental, para apreender o léxico com que elas são referenciadas na observação estatística, e que extravasou para outros campos.
