Beef cattle raising is an important economic activity within the Brazilian agribusiness. Feedlot feeding operations for the finishing of beef cattle has been increasing in the country due to the need to boost productivity and to allocate more space for crop growing. Although this feeding system has some positive impacts on the environment, the negative impacts are huge and the operations have to comply with a series of federal, state and local laws. Regarding federal legislation, the Constitution establishes some parameters, which are better regulated by lower level legislation. The National Policy for Water Resources Act, the National Policy for Solid Waste Act, the Pesticide Act, the CONAMA Directive no. 237/97 and the Forest Code are directly applied to the operations, with small variations from State to State with regards to environmental licenses. Some issues, however, deserve further regulation to minimize the negative impacts of the activity, as for example, the issue about the waste management plan and the disposition of empty containers of veterinary products
