The recognition of property rights over intellectual creations and the development of laws and regulations that followed were historically motivated by technological innovations and social change. Central to the debate are conflicts between public and private interests, which frequently influence the legislative processes on this matter, often reaching the international context. The effects of new technologies on the methods used to create, share, and consume content emphasize the demand for an adequate and updated protection system, especially due to the plurality of interests involved. Through bibliographical and documental research, the present article aims to discuss how authors’ rights were recognized and developed throughout history, focusing on the protection granted to musical works and the adjustments for the digital environment. For this purpose, the concepts, the theoretical justifications, and the evolution of intellectual property in the international framework were addressed
