Resumo: This paper consists of an analysis of forced recruitment in Brazil during the Paraguayan War (1864-1870), investigating the strategies employed by the government and their consequences for the recruits. The sources backing this analysis are newspapers that, at the time, were representative of the population due to the wide public they reached. Such are: Jornal do Commercio (1860 to 1869); Diário de São Paulo (1865 to 1878) and Correio Paulistano (1862 to 1869). The following analysis made it possible to identify the manner forced recruitment was conducted in Brazil, the methods used by local authorities, and the recruits’ reaction to the possibility of going to the war front
