Resumo: The present study aims to cohesion as a syntactic-semantic resource closely related to the coherence of written texts. This study, which is based on the concepts of Textual Linguistics, aims to highlight the significant value of cohesion procedures and resources as promoters of the continuity and the meaning effects of a text. To achieve the defined purpose, the method of bibliographical revision, with greater focus on Fávero (1998), Koch (1997, 1999, 2004), Koch and Elias (2008) and Antunes (2005, 2010) theories was chosen. The analysis was based on the propositions of these theorists and had as corpus two different textual genres: a chronic written by Rubem Braga and a news article from Folha de S. Paulo newspaper, objects that enabled the conclusion that the mastery of linguistic aspects is one of the precepts of textual competence

Esse estudo, que se encontra embasado nas concepções da Linguística Textual, objetiva evidenciar o significativo valor dos procedimentos e recursos da coesão como promotores da continuidade e dos efeitos de sentido de um texto. Para a obtenção do propósito definido, optou-se pelo método de revisão bibliográfica, com maior foco nas teorias de Fávero (1998), Koch (1997, 1999, 2004), Koch e Elias (2008) e Antunes (2005, 2010). A análise sustentou-se nas proposições desses teóricos e teve como corpus dois gêneros textuais distintos: uma crônica de Rubem Braga e uma notícia do jornal Folha de S.
