In this work, we tried to describe, since the historical evolution until the application in specific cases of award calculation, showing the need and, mostly, all the barriers that have to be overcome to make measurable a decision without liquidity. There will be the analysis of several doctrines in order to bring to the reader the main matters related to the award calculation, among them the legal classification of the institute - whether an autonomous claim or an incidental proceeding - whether the decision is on merits, an interlocutory judgment or the possibility to file a motion for anulling judgment. In detailed presentation, will be possible to study several kinds of award calculation, which proceeding is the correct to be adopted, whether chosen arbitrarily by the parties or applied ex officio. Is it possible to calculate debt instruments? Is there calculation of award issued by the small claims court? For all these questions, this work will provide its answers. Bringing practice to theory, the following work comprises several judicial precedents that will show how to apply the law to the claims and, especially, how the matters are approached by the doctrine with several different opinions.
