The purpose of this study is to analyze the Soil Law - Law No. 6,766 of 1979 - from the point of view of environmental protection. The choice of the theme is justified by the fact that illegal subdivisions cause serious damage to the environment. For this reason, the mechanisms of protection to the environment contained in the Law will be object of the present study. The work began with a brief study on the historical process of urbanization in Brazil and its legislative evolution. Next, we examined the principles of urban law contained in the Federal Constitution and the environmental guidelines of urban policy set forth in the City Statute, demonstrating their importance in the quality of life of the population in cities and the environment. Once these foundations were established, the Soil Installment Law was analyzed as an instrument of environmental protection, the main types of land subdivision, the requirements to be subdivided and their limitations. Soon after, the study addressed deviations from the Law and its consequences for the Environment. Finally, the work demonstrates the effective preventive and repressive mechanisms available to the authorities responsible for the strict compliance with the Law. For the accomplishment of the present study the scientific method adopted was the deductive one, being used as main source bibliographic materials
